Many times they are looking for extra money to send their children to college or for their family business. Most of our surrogates live with their families during gestation. We believe this provides them with the care and emotional support they will need.

The process starts by our medical team performing careful planning and assessment of potential surrogates. We have an excellent reputation for providing quality medical care and support to our surrogate mothers. All potential surrogates go through a thorough screening process that begins with a detailed questionnaire, which is the initial screening phase of the application. The surrogate is then interviewed by the medical staff. Finally, a medical examination is given to them. This includes testing for infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C and evidence of drug abuse. Once a candidate has passed these phases, she is considered a potential surrogate mother.

In Laos, only those patients that have serious health issues that preclude them from carrying a baby can use a surrogate. All couples must present their health records, and a letter from their doctor stating such health issues, for our team to review. Usually, within a week or two a decision is made as to whether or not the couple is granted permission to use a surrogate. Through our Gay Surrogacy program, we do offer surrogate mothers to gay couples and single gay intended fathers providing they can financially and responsibly care for a child. Additionally, we support couples to build a relationship with their surrogate mother. Being with the surrogate mother when she undergoes sonograms and other examinations is highly encouraged.

There are five steps to the gestational surrogacy process. These five steps are described below:

1. ) Producing eggs
Fertility drugs such as Fertinex, Foolistim, or Gonal-f are given to the egg donor or intended mother in order to increase the amount of egg cells produced. The chances of conception are raised by increasing the number of follicles, which is the part of the ovary that contains the eggs. This, in turn, increases the number of embryos developed and raises the chance of fertilization. The menstrual cycles of the egg donor or intended mother and the surrogate mother are synced through the use of the drug Lupron. During this time, daily injections of one of the previously named fertility drugs to foster multi-follicular development will be given. Typically, around the 14th day, the fertility doctor will then give the egg donor or intended mother a fertility drug called Human Chorionic Gonadatropin (HCG). This fertility drug will assist in the eggs coming to their final maturity. After a day and one half, the egg donor or the intended mother will have her eggs retrieved.

2. ) Preparing the uterus for implantation
Through the use of estrogen and progesterone hormones, the surrogate mother will be hormonally synchronized. The carrier’s endometrial receptivity will be assessed by means of blood tests and ultrasounds. Additionally, the angle and depth of the cervix and uterus will be ascertained using a catheter similar to the one that will be used for the actual embryo transfer.

3. ) Retrieving the eggs
The eggs are obtained from the donor or the intended mother with the use of ultrasound-guided process under IV sedation. The eggs and follicles are detected from within the follicular fluid under a microscope before being held in a laboratory incubator to await fertilization by the intended father, who will be expected to produce a sperm sample on the same day.

4. ) Transferring the embryos
Depending upon how successfully the embryos develop, they will be transferred up to three to five days following their initial retrieval. The number of embryos to be transferred into the surrogate mother will be discussed with the intended parents, the surrogate, and the fertility doctor. The number of embryos transferred will vary according to the quantity and quality of the embryos. At this stage, remaining embryos in good condition will be frozen for future use. Freezing embryos ensures you will have them in case you need subsequent cycles or if you desire to have another baby in the future. Your embryos can be frozen in our lab for up to five years. After the embryos are selected, the surrogate undergoes a short, virtually painless procedure similar to a pap smear, in order to implant the embryos. The surrogate mother will then be allowed to return home to take it easy for the rest of the day.

5. ) Testing for pregnancy 
Typically, about ten days after the embryo transfer, the surrogate will give a blood sample to test for pregnancy. If the blood test comes back positive, the surrogate will be monitored monthly by the fertility hospital for the entire gestation period.
