Surrogacy in Asia

Surrogacy-in-Asia - Surrogacy in AsiaSurrogacy in Asia is a great way for intended parents who want to have their baby and cannot afford to do it in countries like the U.S. where the costs can exceed $150,000 or more. Since most Asian countries, especially in southeast Asia, have lower costs, it makes it more affordable for single or married intended parents to have their baby. Asia is also a beautiful destination for tourism and many people who come to do surrogacy in Asia also vacation there.

Surrogacy in Asia has become more and more popular over the past 10 to 12 years. It actually started in India because India already had a developed Medical Tourism industry and surrogacy in India became popular because a huge part of that Medical tourism making it the most traveled to country in Asia for surrogacy. Because of the very low living costs in India, fertility clinics popped up everywhere offering very affordable surrogacy services. Most surrogacy packages were around $30,000. This is a fraction of what it costs to do it in the United States. India also had a good system. The country had specific surrogacy laws and even formally commercialized it and legalized it. Most importantly, intended parents got their names on the birth certificate. Thousands of intended parents worldwide, most from western countries, went to India to make their babies. Only after much government pressure and pressure from the international community about women’s rights and moral issues did India finally decided to close its doors to surrogacy.

When India closed its doors to surrogacy, the practice moved over to Thailand where it became a booming business for around a decade. Thailand’s alluring culture and beautiful beaches were a huge factor in attracting westerners to its country. Like India, Thailand had a Medical Tourism industry too and there were 15 hospitals in Bangkok alone that were JCI accredited. JCI (Joint Commission International) is a non government group that gives accreditation to hospitals worldwide and is very picky who can get it. A hospital has to have very high standards to get the accreditation. Unlike India, though, surrogacy was a grey area in Thailand and was never commercialize or legalized. Only after two major scandals did Thailand follow India and closed its doors to surrogacy.

Surrogacy in Asia continued in Cambodia where, like Thailand, the country didn’t have formal surrogacy laws and the practice was a grey area. Many agents and even Thai doctors went to Cambodia and opened up shop there. These Thai doctors brought a wealth of experience in fertility treatment and surrogacy. However, surrogacy was short lived in Cambodia and after about 1 ½ to 2 years, Cambodia also closed its doors to surrogacy.

Laos became a good option and the practice moved over to Laos after Cambodia banned surrogacy. There are 2 major fertility clinics in Laos and both are run by Thai doctors. Laos has more relaxed laws than other countries in Asia and it is expected that the practice will last a longer time than in other countries in Asia.

Surrogacy in Asia is a great option for intended parents and one should consider it as there are many merits of doing surrogacy in Laos, not to mention the cheaper costs than in western countries.
