Gay Surrogacy in Asia is an excellent choice for single or gay men to expand their families buy having a baby born through a surrogate mother in Asia. This option is much more affordable than doing surrogacy in the U.S. where the price has skyrocketed to over $150,000 for a single attempt. One of the main reasons why the price shot up so much is because many people from mainland China travel to the U.S. for surrogacy in the hopes their baby will be born in the U.S. and be granted U.S. citizenship. Many fertility clinics in the U.S. have seen their businesses grow exponentially over the past few years and there is no end in sight.
Surrogacy originally began in India where the country actually commercialized the practice. It lasted over 10 years and was a half of a billion dollar industry. However, after news that spread around the world of Indian surrogate mothers being exploited by being paid so little, in some cases Indian surrogates were paid less than $6,000 to carry a westerner’s baby, the government started cracking down. Initially, they banned surrogacy to gay and single intended parents. After a couple of years, the government completely closed its doors to surrogacy for all foreigners.
After India closed its doors to surrogacy for foreigners, Thailand became the main go to country in Asian for surrogacy. In fact, there is no other country in all of Asian that receives more tourists from around the world than Thailand. Because of its warm culture, great food, and lovely Thai people, Thailand is a very popular spot for vacationers. In Bangkok alone, there were dozens of fertility clinics providing surrogacy. However, after a couple of scandals that rocketed the industry in Thailand, the government permanently closed its doors to surrogacy in July 2015. But it didn’t take long for Thai doctors to go to neighboring Cambodia to provide the service. However, surrogacy was very short lived in Cambodia. It lasted only 9 months before the Cambodia government shut down the business. Many intended parents were left struggling to find a way to get their babies out of Cambodia. Finally, the government offered support to those intended parents and opened a channel for them to legally get their babies out of the country.
Currently, the Communist country of Laos, which is only 1 out of 4 Communist left in the world, opened its door to surrogacy. Since last year, there have been dozens of fertility clinics opening in Laos and it seems that unlike India, Thailand, and Cambodia, Laos may actually be agreat place for the thriving business. It has been said that the Laos government may formally recognize surrogacy and draft a law legalizing it under certain regulations.
