Buddhism and Fertility Treatment in Laos are important to understand because of its effects on everyday Lao culture. When traveling to Laos to do fertility treatment, one should understand how important Buddhism is to the Lao people. It is estimated that over 95% of all Laotians practice Buddhism. Buddhism is a warm and peaceful religion and its effects permeate Lao society. The type of Buddhism Lao people practice is Theravada Buddhism. Theravada Buddhism is the oldest type of Buddhism and is the most unchanged type of Buddhism. Its doctrines date back to the 6th century BC.
Laos Fertility knows that the first part of the doctrines are the doctrines of “Karma” and “Samsara”. Buddhism teaches us that we all have karma, both good and bad. Karma is the sum of all the consequences of our actions during the successive phases of our lives. Samsara is the eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. So ones karma occurs in these stages. If one does evil acts, one will receive negative karma. If not in this life, then it another life. If one does good deeds, then good karma will follow. If not in this life, then in another life.
The second part of Theravada Buddhism presents the discourses of the Buddha and contains the dharma, which defines the way to nirvana. The Theravada doctrine emphasis 3 main phases of existence. The anicca (impermanence), the dukkha (dissatisfaction), and the anatta (insubstantiality). In the West, Buddhism has been slightly misinterpreted. Westerners thought that Buddhists believe that if we removed all desires then our suffering will cease. Theravada Buddhism actually goes beyond that. The belief that nothing lasts forever and if we try to hold on to something that we were supposed to let go, then dukkha exits. This is that feeling of “something is just not quite right.” We are left feeling uncontended. If we know how to let go and clear our minds, then we remove the tension or dissatisfaction.
Theravada Buddhism teaches that the only way one can break the endless cycles of birth, death, and rebirth is to reach the state of “Nirvana”. We know that the ultimate aim of Buddhism is to reach this state of enlightenment. Reaching nirvana occurs when we reach a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering (dissatisfaction), desire, nor sense of self, within us. We are then released from the effects of karma and samsara.
Most Laotians place little emphasis on the achievement of nirvana, whether as a final state after many rebirths or as an interior condition. In reality, most Lao people aim for rebirth in a “better” existence. By giving offerings or donations to the monks and visiting local temples, Laotians seek to acquire merit which they call “Tham Bun”. Making Tham Bun is an important activity to the Lao people as they strive for a better existence. This “better existence” gives them the will power to believe in a better way of living. It is really something different that just doesn’t exist in the western world.
Buddhism and Fertility Treatment in Laos are important part of understanding the Lao people. Doing fertility treatment in Laos is not just a medical practice but an incorporation of other elements sometimes not seen in the actual existence but in the minds of people who follow this peaceful path to enlightenment. One can easily see how important Buddhism is to the Lao people and how it serves as a foundation to their society. Having such a peaceful belief so stitched into the fabric of their society is what makes Lao society so special. From the warmth of their voices to the smiles on their faces, Laotians are a special people indeed.
