Male and Female Infertility

Male-and-Female-Infertility - Traveling Egg DonorsMale and female infertility is a subject of modern day debate. Most people believe that it’s always the female’s fault when a pregnancy can’t occur. They just assume that the woman has some “female” problems and that’s why she can’t get pregnant. However, what most individuals don’t understand is that recent studies actually prove that infertility is equally split between male and female. Perhaps, it’s easier to blame the woman while most men won’t want to accept the fact that they themselves may not be fertile. Therefore, let’s take a look at what causes infertility in men and women and discuss some remedies on how to improve their fertility.

Women infertility is caused by a number of problems. It could be medical such as a kidney disease. A common cause of infertility in women can be the number of eggs she has. What most women are surprised to learn that by the time they reach 30 years of age, 80% of their ovarian reserve is gone. By the time a woman reaches 40 years of age, she has less than 2% of her ovarian reserve. While it only takes 1 single egg to get fertilized and grow into an embryo, often the eggs at that age are not as good and the occurrence for birth defects greatly increases. Another reason why a woman can’t get pregnant is she may be born without a womb. This is called Müllerian agenesis or müllerian aplasia. Probably the most common reason why women might have difficulty getting pregnant is something is wrong with her ovaries such as a cyst. Sometimes cysts can be removed and the woman can then get pregnant. If a woman wants to increase her fertility, there are many simple things she can do such as exercising, eating a healthy diet, staying away from caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, taking multivitamins or fertility pills, and getting plenty of sleep. If these don’t work then, she will likely need to seek fertility treatment.

Most of the time when men have fertility problems, it has something to do with their sperm. They could have a low sperm count, unhealthy sperm or no sperm at all. Some men are born like this and others are caused by their lifestyles. Like women, men also should be eating a healthy diet, staying away from caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, taking multivitamins or fertility pills, and getting plenty of sleep. Additionally, men should wear boxer underwear or no underwear at all. Heat kills sperm. Sometimes by making these small adjustments to their lives, their sperm can be strong and healthy. If not, they can elect to go to a fertility doctor to see if they are a candidate for a procedure called Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE). This is a procedure that removes a small part of the tissue from the testicle under local anesthesia and extracting the some viable sperm and then used in IVF to fertilize an egg/s.

Male and female infertility is a common occurrence in our world today, especially because of the lifestyles we live, the stress we have, and our diet. However, by making some lifestyle changes often we can have success. If not, fertility treatment is then an option for intended parents to make the family.
