Traveling Surrogacy

Traveling Surrogacy is a rather new phenomenon in our world today. A decade ago, not many would think of traveling to a foreign country to do surrogacy. However, the world has changed and traveling to a foreign country for fertility treatment and/or surrogacy has gained international attention. Traveling surrogate mothers are also traveling outside of their countries to receive treatment at fertility clinics so they can carry another person’s baby. So you may ask yourself the question “Why do surrogate mothers have to travel outside of their country to receive treatment so they can carry another person’s baby?” One has to look back at the history of surrogacy in foreign countries to get that answer.
The first surrogate baby was Louise Joy Brown. She was born through a surrogate mother in the UK on July 25, 1978. Since then, surrogacy became very popular in the West, especially in the United States. However, the costs have gone up exponentially because of the simple business model, demand. Thousands of women a year try to have their own baby but cannot. Some of these reasons are health issues and some are due to age. An additional element that really made the price skyrocket is the fact that many wealthy Chinese people come to the U.S. for surrogacy in the hopes of having their baby born here, thus getting them American citizenship. In fact, the costs have gone up so much that it now costs around $150,000 or more to do surrogacy in the U.S. So people had to look for other options and that meant traveling to other countries where the treatment is still good, but much less expensive.
India, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos became the go to countries where one could find cheaper surrogacy. However, after a few scandals and a change in their governments’ policies, all but Laos has banned surrogacy. So this is what led to traveling surrogacy. The surrogate mother can still live in her country, for instance in Thailand, and take an hour flight to a fertility clinic in Laos for the treatment and then travel back to Thailand to give birth. This way, legally, no laws are broken since the fertility treatment takes place in Laos.
Traveling surrogacy is a great option for couples looking for a cheaper way to do surrogacy, but keep it within the laws of the country. It is really a win-win situation for all involved. The doctor travels to the country to perform the treatment, thus still making money, the intended parents get their baby, and the surrogate mother has an opportunity to earn money which will change her life for the better. It is a unique way in achieving happiness where it wouldn’t have otherwise had happened. Our dedicated team in Thailand and Laos can help make this happen.
