However, after a series of scandals that hit the Thailand surrogacy business, the Thai military government banned the practice completely to foreigners, so surrogacy agencies quickly moved their businesses over to neighboring Cambodia, where like Thailand, surrogacy laws were a grey area.

Unfortunately, the surrogacy business in Cambodia lasted about 1 ½ years before the government made the practice illegal and even labeled surrogacy as a form of human trafficking. So surrogacy agencies moved to Laos where the Communist government doesn’t regulate the practice. The common practice now is to do the treatment in Thailand and have the surrogate mother travel to neighboring Laos for the egg collection and embryo, because these two procedures are not allowed in Thailand. Then the surrogate mother travels to a neighboring country to deliver the baby.

These countries all serve the surrogacy industry, while some are more attractive than others. One thing to keep in mind is the prices have gone up quite a bit. Surrogacy is now twice as much as it was in India. A typical surrogacy case now costs around $60,000. This is still a bargain compared to the surrogacy prices found in the United States.
