Surrogacy in Southeast Asia has become a prime destination for married or single intended parents. This initially evolved in India before it became popular in Southeast Asia. Over the past 10 to 12 years, India emerged as the go to destination for western couples who could not afford to do surrogacy in the U.S. or in their home countries. Another factor was in some countries, surrogacy was not permitted. India’s medical tourism industry stemmed from fertility treatment. The country actually had formally legalized the practice and had specific laws governing it. Suddenly, the country decided not to allow single or gay intended parents to do surrogacy in India. This was a prelude to what happened 2 years later, a full ban of the practice.
After India closed its doors to surrogacy, Thailand became the go to country for surrogacy. Unlike India, Thailand did not have any formal laws regulating surrogacy. It was a grey area. Over a period of 8 to 10 years, thousands of westerners were drawn to Thailand for surrogacy. Unlike India, Thailand has a huge tourism industry. In fact, the country receives more tourist than any other country in Asia mostly due to its exotic beaches, abundant shopping, great food, and the warm smiles of the Thai people. These all made Thailand a popular destination. Although, like India, Thailand too follow with a ban of surrogacy after two scandals that rocked the industry.
Agencies looking across the border to Cambodia and Laos soon opened clinics there and not long after did the surrogacy industry thrive once again in countries where there is little regulation of the practice. There are two main fertility clinics in the capital city of Phnom Penh. There is one fertility clinic in the beautiful city of Siam Reap where travelers can also indulge in the beauty of Angkor Wat and the ancient ruins that surround this 8th Wonder of the World. These 3 clinics are run by Thai doctors from Bangkok. However, Cambodia surprised the industry by making surrogacy an illegal practice almost overnight blind siding many western couples who had surrogate mothers already pregnant.
Thai doctors from Bangkok didn’t waste any time in finding a new country in Southeast Asia to work in. Laos is now basically the only country left in Southeast Asia where surrogacy is practiced. There are currently 2 clinics in the capital city of Vientiane. Both are run by Thai doctors from Bangkok who brings years of experience to the fertility field.
