COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Laos
On Wednesday, March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the Coronavirus is a global pandemic. Covid-19, or Coronavirus, is a disease that causes respiratory illness similar to the flu. It causes one to get a fever, cough, diarrhea, and/or trouble breathing. It is especially bad for older and very young or sick people. What makes this virus really bad is it’s airborne and spreads so quickly. Additionally, it can stay inside one’s body for several days or even weeks without the person knowing they have it. This is how this awful virus spreads, because the person unknowingly carrying the virus makes contact with people everyday, especially in public places. It can also cause death. But you may ask what is a “Pandemic?”
What is a Global Pandemic?
A pandemic is a disease that starts in a small geographical region just like it did in Wuhan, China. The disease starts with a chain of events with confirmed cases like an outbreak. Once the disease spreads beyond the small geographical region, it becomes an epidemic. Once the disease spreads beyond international borders, the disease is then classified as a global pandemic, as what is occurring with the Coronavirus.
As of today, there are over 2 million confirmed cases of coronavirus around the world with the U.S. reporting the most cases. In fact, the U.S. has nearly 1/3 of all confirmed cases worldwide.
To prevent the widespread of this terrible disease many countries around the world have restricted travel to their countries and have even closed off their borders until the virus gets under control. It is advised that people wear masks if they must go outside and wash their hands and disinfect their bodies the best they can with hand sanitizes and alcohol sprays. It is also advised not to be in groups or to have social gatherings. Hence, in many countries, restaurants, bars, clubs, sporting events, and other social places have closed down. When grocery shopping, it is advised to clean and sanitize your groceries before bringing them into your house or consuming the food.
What is Laos doing about Covid-19?
Many of you may be wondering what Laos is doing to control the spread of coronavirus, especially those who want to travel to Laos for fertility treatment. Laos has been very proactive in controlling Covid-19. In fact, as of today there are only 19 confirmed cases in Laos with only 1 death. The Laos government has taken serious steps in helping the country to deal with Covid-19. They have closed all their borders and are not issuing visas until the end of April at the earliest. They have restricted their citizens to travel outside. Only hospitals, grocery stores, and banks remain open. Public transportation has also been suspended. Like the U.S., Laos has also closed restaurants, bars, clubs, sporting events, public holidays, and other social places. One good thing the Laos government did was if a foreign national is stuck inside Laos and cannot travel, the government is exempting visa overstay fees until the end of the month.
Other steps Laos is taking to control the spread of the virus includes:
- Telling people to avoid crowds & social or public gatherings;
- Advising people to wash their hands often;
- Advising people to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth;
- Telling people to keep a distance of at least one meter (3 feet) between themselves and others when possible;
- Telling people to cover their mouths and noses if they should sneeze or cough;
- Advising all people to comply with Laos health travel recommendations for those who have to travel;
- Advising people to seek medical care as soon as they are experiencing symptoms such as coughing, high fever, or having any kind of breathing difficulty.
With these proactive steps in place, Laos hopes to resume normalcy as soon as possible.
Feeling Hopeful in Laos
Laos Fertility is quite hopeful that with the proactive steps Laos is taking in preventing the spread of the coronavirus the country will open up soon. We are hoping as early as the end of the month. Being a small country has its benefits. It makes it easier for the government to control the way it operates and thus being able to contain the spread of the virus is easier than in a large country like the U.S. where laws differ from state to state and complying becomes more difficult.
Please contact us at Laos Fertility as we are still open and will update you of the situation as we get the news.
